A new year means a whole new list of album releases to look forward to, right? The confirmed releases are light so far, but here’s what we know and what we hope is ahead for music in 2014. Are you ready for a new year of new music? Us, too! Check out the list we made for our own most anticipated albums of 2014
1. Beck - Morning Phase
After roughly six years and numerous teases, we’re finally getting a new, full album from the California rocker. So stoked. Morning Phase will be release on February 25th.
2. St. Vincent - St. Vincent
The lovable Annie Clark is at it, again, with a self-titled album. A press release for the record quoted Clark as saying, “I wanted to make a pretty album you could play at a funeral.”
3. Damon Albarn - Damon Albarn (XL)
Though the prolific Blur frontman and Gorillaz mastermind seemingly can’t stop releasing music with a variety of collaborators, he’s never had much of a solo career, aside from an underwhelming collection of demos released under his own name over a decade ago, and an opera score a few years back. But his proper solo debut will arrive in 2014.
On Cloud Nothings’ previous record Attack on Memory, frontman Dylan Baldi demanded some time to himself, to stop moving, to stay useless. And he got it—2013 was the first year in the past five that didn’t result in the release of new Cloud Nothings music. Though the band has been reduced to a trio and swapped out Steve Albini for St. Vincent and Bill Callahan producer John Congleton, a trailer for their untitled fourth LP suggests they’ve managed to make the bracing, melodic punk of Attack on Memory into something even leaner and nastier.
5. Real Estate – Atlas (Domino)
The lackadaisical guitar pop of New Jersey chillers Real Estate came more sharply into focus on their 2011 sophomore LP, Days; with an expanded lineup, Real Estate made the maddening mundanity of the suburbs sound romantic. Since then, bassist Alex Bleeker released a record with his solo project and guitarist Matt Mondanile released two with Ducktails. The just-shared preview of Real Estate’s next LP, Atlas, sounds louder and more lyrical—a proper progression from a band that hopefully has more than a few left in them.
6. Mac DeMarco – Salad Days
The 23-year-old Canadian “slacker-rock” artist impressed critics with his two previous solo releases on Captured Tracks, and returns with a third this spring. DeMarco will also take his bawdy live act on the road for much of the first half of the year.
7. Liars – Mess (Mute)
Two years removed from their best album to date, indie iconoclasts Liars return with their seventh LP this spring. The first album track to emerge so far is the propulsive , though the band has also released an . Should be release on March 25th.
